Did you know? The HPV vaccine helps prevent cervical, genital & throat cancers as well as genital warts. And the good news is that from 2017 it is free for boys and girls up to age 26.

The HPV vaccine Gardasil had been funded for girls age 12 to 18 since 2008. The widening of funding is certainly a welcoming move, as previously girls outside of the funding criteria or boys needed to pay $500 to $600 for the immunisation course.

This move makes sense, because this is a prevention for cervical, genital and throat cancers, which will lower their rates in the future. This investment in our health will be saving the government money down the line. Already, we are seeing a dramatic reduction in the rates of cervical cancer and genital warts.

For more information see the HPV section on our funded immunisation page, as well as Ministry of Health.
